Studying for a bachelor’s degree in the United States often sounds like a dream too expensive for Indonesian students to reach. Yet behind the reputation of world-class campuses like Harvard, MIT, or Yale, there are plenty of fully funded scholarship routes that genuinely cover tuition, housing, and even airfare without burdening your parents a single cent. The key is just one thing: knowing where to look and how to prepare early. Let’s dive into the complete list below!
What Is a Fully Funded Scholarship?
A fully funded scholarship is one that covers every component of your studies, not just tuition. It usually includes:
- Full tuition fees for the entire duration of study
- Housing and living costs (monthly stipend)
- Round-trip airfare
- Health insurance
- Sometimes also book funding, visa costs, and research or internship allowances
This is different from a partially funded scholarship, which only covers part of the costs for example, tuition only, without living expenses. For Indonesian students who want to study for a bachelor’s degree in America with zero financial burden, pursuing a fully funded scholarship is the most realistic strategy.
Why Are Fully Funded Bachelor’s Scholarships in America Harder to Get Than Master’s Scholarships?
If you’ve already done some research on American scholarships, you may have noticed that fully funded scholarships for Master’s programs are far more numerous and better known than those for bachelor’s degrees. There are several reasons behind this:
- Most flagship scholarship programs are only for Master’s/PhD level. Fulbright, for instance, is extremely popular among Indonesian students, but this program is specifically for Master’s and PhD levels, not for bachelor’s degrees.
- Need-blind and full-need policies for international students are very limited. Only a handful of top universities think Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, or Amherst actually admit international undergraduate students without considering their financial situation, and then fully cover their demonstrated financial need. Most other campuses are “need-aware,” meaning ability to pay still factors into the selection process.
- Competition is far tighter because the applicant pool is much larger. The number of high school graduates who want to study for a bachelor’s degree abroad is much higher than the number of Master’s applicants, while fully funded bachelor’s scholarship slots remain relatively scarce.
- Academic and document requirements are more complex at such a young age. Bachelor’s applicants have to prepare their school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores (if required), personal essays, and a track record of extracurricular involvement all while still in high school, long before they have the kind of work or research experience Master’s applicants typically bring.
Even though it’s more challenging, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Here are several real options open to Indonesian students.
List of Fully Funded U.S. Undergraduate Scholarships Open to Indonesian Students
1. Beasiswa Indonesia Maju (BIM)
Beasiswa Indonesia Maju is a program from the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas) under the Ministry of Education that opens an overseas bachelor’s degree pathway, including to the United States, for high-achieving 12th-grade students.
The program consists of a preparation stage (language test prep, counseling, and university application fees) and a full-funding stage once you’re admitted. The good news: this program sets no age limit or minimum GPA requirement, as long as you have a track record of achievement in national or international competitions within the last three years.
2. Berea College International Student Scholarship
Berea College in Kentucky has a unique policy: the campus never charges tuition to any student, including international students, through its program called the No-Tuition Promise.
Besides being tuition-free for four years, first-year international students also have their housing, meals, and other costs covered. In return, every student is required to work 10–15 hours a week on campus through the Labor Program, a system that leaves graduates, on average, debt-free.
3. Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship
Specifically for students from Asia, including Indonesia, Wesleyan University offers the Freeman Asian Scholarship, a full four-year scholarship covering tuition, housing, meals, books, and round-trip airfare, worth more than US$90,000 in total. Each year, around 11 students from eleven Asian countries are selected to receive this scholarship. The requirement: you must apply as a financial aid-seeking candidate and must not have previously enrolled full-time in college.
4. American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS)
In Washington DC, American University offers the Emerging Global Leader Scholarship for high-achieving international students committed to bringing positive change to their home communities. This full scholarship covers all mandatory campus costs (tuition, housing, and meals), plus there’s a partial scholarship option worth up to US$40,000 per year for candidates who don’t win the full scholarship but are still deemed worthy.
5. Need-Blind Scholarships from Elite American Universities
Several top-tier American campuses such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Dartmouth, and Amherst College apply a need-blind policy for international applicants meaning your financial situation has zero bearing on the admission decision. If admitted, these campuses commit to covering 100% of demonstrated financial need, with no loans, purely through grants and scholarships. This route is extremely competitive, with very low acceptance rates, but for students with outstanding academic achievements, it’s one of the most prestigious fully funded routes available.
